Meet the Team

The SASHN team has a combined century of experience in the South African equine industry. Together, Simon Hendry, Tracey Carney and Jan Kleynhans present a unique mix of business and sport horse skills, experience, trustworthy expertise, and credibility to the industry – thereby setting both sellers and buyers at ease.

Simon Hendry

Simon Hendry is the owner and trainer at H Equestrian, a well-established yard in Glenferness, boasting superb facilities conveniently located near main show venues. He has been riding since the age of eight and jumping at the top level for well over 15 years. At this level, Simon has won many of the major classes, and is regularly in the placings with young horses and experienced horses alike.

Simon specialises in bringing young horses and riders up from basics and strives to build their confidence as he develops their abilities. His focus is encouraging love and respect for the horse, while enjoying this wonderful sport. A great advantage to Simon’s riding and training is that he regularly travels abroad to ride and train with the best in the world, the most recent being with George Morris and Chris Kappler in Florida, USA

Simon’s string of top Open horses continues to excel in the show ring. Riding Simon Burn’s magnificently talented Erreplus Casper, Simon placed 3rd at the 2019 South African Championships in Shongweni and 2nd in his first World Cup Qualifier in Polokwane. Riding the superb Erreplus Lindor (now in the 1.35m) is also a great source of pride. Principal Legionnaire (owned by Franlaren Stud) has been a faithful and brave competitor in the 1.50m classes for many years, winning World Cup Qualifiers and Grand Prix classes. French Diamond HPE (owned by Simon himself) is a tremendous up and coming young stallion imported from Holland, by Diamant de Semilly. He is soon to start his career in the open classes and is an exciting prospect for the future.

Simon is a brand ambassador for both Tack ‘n Togs and Erreplus. He considers it a privilege to be part of the team. He believes the equipment to be stylish and of great quality, enabling both horses and riders to perform at their best.

Tracey Carney

At just seven years old, Tracey Carney was inspired by her big sister to start riding. She has been in the saddle ever since, competing successfully at Children, Junior and Adult levels and acting as a work rider since the age of 12. Over the years, Tracey has worked for the likes of Barry Taylor, Anneli Wucherpfennig in Holland, Michael Benjamin, Ronnie Lawrence and the Neill Family. She has been coaching since the age of 19.

Tracey received provincial colours for Equitation in Childrens and Juniors, as well as National and Provincial colours for Show Jumping in Juniors and Adults. In Juniors, Tracey won every title in Show Jumping (except for the SA Junior Derby, where she finished second). As a multi-talented rider, she has also competed in Dressage to Elementary level.

In her career as an Adult competitor, Tracey boasts many strong finishes. In 2005, after a very successful year in the ring, she was ranked third in South Africa and represented the then THS at Inter-Provincials. She continued this streak in 2006, again representing THS and ranking as the top South African rider on the SANEF Riders Ranking. In 2007, Tracey received South African Colours and toured to New Zealand for Tri-Nations series. She successfully competed against teams from New Zealand and Australia, with South Africa finishing second. She was also chosen for the South African team to compete at the All Africa Games in Algeria, where she won a bronze medal for the team event.

Tracey started her own stable yard in 2010, Carney Equestrian, situated in Randjesfontein. She continues to compete at all levels, producing clients’ young horses for competitive Show Jumping. She also competes successfully in the Open Classes on her two horses, which she produced herself. Tracey passes on her knowledge passionately, coaching pupils in Eventing, Dressage and Show Jumping up to 1.40m.

Jan Kleynhans

More than four decades ago, at the tender age of 10, Jan first sat in a saddle at Inanda Club. He feverishly pursued his passion for riding, later joining Grayston Stables, and then Bryanston Equitation Centre, coached then by Rogan Asken and Willie Pieters. Jan first discovered his love for producing horses when he bought a lovely young thoroughbred off the track, eventually jumping into the open grades (Medium A) in the early 80s.

While his enthusiasm for equine sports never left him, Jan took a long break from riding; first to complete his Chartered Accountancy studies and then to raise a family while cultivating a successful career in banking and financial services, which spanned 25 years.

In 2012, Jan returned to the equestrian sport. To facilitate his re-entry into South African arenas, he purchased several impressive warmbloods from Germany, and locally from the Callaho Stud. Jan has now produced all his own horses to Open level, under the instruction of his coach, Dominey Alexander.

Having recently competed in his first SA Derby, Jan loves producing and competing horses at all levels. As an extremely keen and dedicated equestrian athlete, he is excited to be in a position to help others find suitable horses to meet unique riders’ needs.
